Public Forum Debate involves opposing teams of two that advocate for or rejects a position posed by the resolution. Each team debates either in affirmation or negation of the resolution, in 1st or 2nd speaker order. Thus, teams are required to be able to defend both sides of the resolution. Students present cases, engage in rebuttal and refutation, and also participate in a “crossfire” (similar to a cross examination) with the opportunity to question the opposing team. A central tenet of the debate is that the clash of ideas must be communicated in a manner persuasive to the non-specialist or "citizen judge." Public forum debaters gain a breadth of knowledge about domestic and foreign policy as well as international relations.

Meets Wednesdays from 3:45-5:45 PM in Room N-209
