- It's fun! GunnSD is a tight-knit community where we guarantee you'll make some incredible friends. We always have food and we attend dozens of tournaments, both local and overnight, giving you lots of opportunities to compete. Some of our traditions include senior plates (signed paper plates for graduating seniors, because debate tournaments give plates to people who win) and an annual potluck.
- You'll learn a lot. You'll learn about the world around you, how to build arguments, and how to speak persuasively under pressure. That makes you a more informed person, and your essays, DBQs, presentations, and interviews are going to be so much easier with that skill set.
- It's great for your resume. If you put time into speech and debate, GunnSD has the resources to make you successful at it. We've had members rank as high as 3rd in the nation for their event and reach semifinals at the Tournament of Champions; our alumni have gone on to attend some of the best colleges in the nation. The team has many opportunities for leadership—from branch captains to president to outreach director–so you can deepen your involvement and help build this team.
- It's accessible. We're beginner-friendly, so you don't need prior experience to join, and we're always looking for a diverse group of people to create the strongest team possible! We attend both local and national tournaments, can work for many different levels of commitment, and try to ensure finances aren’t a barrier.
